CHARACTERISTICS TO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD MAN

  1. Is he open to God? (Does he hear from God and then obey what he heard from the Lord? If God can persuade him to do right he will be in a position to do God's perfect will on the earth. Does he believe that God can speak to his heart through other people? Who are the people that he believes can influence his decisions other than God? Hopefully, his pastor, wife, children, parents and his job supervisor are in that category.

  2. Is he a good worker? (Is he a hard worker? Likes to see the job done through completion? Does he like to work? In other words is he more satisfied to work than to relax. (Relaxation should always follow a good days work or a good week of work, remember the Sabbath.)

  3. Is he a good steward? Does he handle his money well? Does he handle his assets the right way? This can be judged by his priority of spending and the portion (% - percentage) of his income spent on his expenses. Does he live on a budget? (We all should be spending toward an ultimate goal.) If one has no plan he is planning for a future disaster without realizing it.

  4. Is he a good manager of his relationships? How does his relationship stand with his mother and father? (We know this can shorten his life here on earth if he lacks honoring his parents according to Ephesians 6:2,3.) What type of friends does he keep close to him? (His inner circle should be pure and holy.) Who is his preferred company saints or sinners?) How is his relationship with you and your children? Is the communication open and honest with actions following?
The above information is good for a foundation of a marital relationship but even more importantly than that foundation is the good woman’s ability to effectively (scripturally) pray for their mate and hear from God for their questions and concerns. Every person who is a Christian has a spiritual obligation before God to spend time in the Lord's Presence learning about God and seeking to know and do God's Will for their life. The more you openly and honestly pray for the man the Lord's Will shall be revealed to you and His Will for that mate should be your will for your man also. In essence, if God has no positive influence on a person, you likewise as a woman will have no positive influence on that same man. Remember, Jesus prayed for Peter in the hour of temptation and although Peter stumbled and fell he got back up and repented for the sin because Jesus prayed and consistently encouraged Peter through love.-Luke 22:31,32 Peter was able to respond favorably to God's promptings of love. It is essential for a man or woman to have an open relationship with God to be a good man or woman of God without item number one the two will never become God’s ordained one. This is also true for Paul and Timothy when Timothy was facing some challenges but Timothy like Peter overcame the obstacles before him through faith and encouragement displayed by those who loved him.-2 Timothy 1:2-9 The more time you spend in prayer for someone else (as opposed to yourself) the better you will learn the heart of that person because you will start seeing them from God's perspective rather than your own. Since the marital relationship is ordained of God it would be wise to know His (God's) specific thoughts about a proposed mate first before you enter into a binding legal contract. If some doubts exist it is normal because we can not know the totality of our future but you should have no doubts about what type of person you are marrying because God knows them inside-out and you have the opportunity to know them spiritually through God’s wisdom given unto you. Remember you, Oh Good Woman, are a child of God that delights in hearing from your Heavenly Father. So take time to fellowship with Him in the Word of God, the Praises of God and your prayers to God. However, we must be willing to hear God's honest opinion according to His Word and His Love for both of you, yourself and the potential spouse (the Good Man). Rest assured that all things in your life will be well if you trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding by acknowledging Him so that He Can Direct Thy Paths (This includes marriage, other relationships and even where you should live).

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. KJV

And

2 Peter 1:4-10
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: KJV

Item 1 (Spiritually - God's Heart) states who you are - An obedient sensitive Believer with humility or someone else that would be unfavorable toward God's Will. This is what lets everyone know if Jesus is really the Lord over your life or if you are lord over your own life or some other idol is occupying that sacred position. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Item 2 (Physically - Your Body) states what type of work ethic you display - This is not to be confused with potential this must be shown right now in the nature to be manifested consistently in the future. The Holy Bible declares man to be a worker with the implication of a hard worker after the fall (from the sweat of thy brow - Genesis 3:19). A good man of necessity will be a good worker that produces profitable results.

Item 3 (Mentally - Your Soul) states what type of mind you have - Typically a good man will provide for his household first because 1 Timothy 5:8 states if you don't you are worst than an unbeliever (infidel). So the issue of stewardship basically determines if the man is serious about His God and His Family. All expenses should revolve around these two central beings because those individuals represent the tangible essence of God's Love released through an individual. If the spouse does not think along these lines their decisions will always be skewed.

Item 4 (Spiritually - Your Heart) states what type of heart you have - This is where the rubber meets the road. One must be developed in Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance to proper handle relationships. If the traits are not there initially, we praise God because we are joyfully and diligently working toward the full development of these fruits in our lives. In order to glorify God in our life spiritually, mentally and physically by our treatment of other people. Truthfully, if one does not treat everyone the same, he treats no one respectfully, thus they dishonor their fellowman which dishonors our Heavenly Father, God and our Lord, Jesus Christ.
