HUMILITY

Definition: Humble

  1. Low; opposed to high or lofty

  2. Low; opposed to lofty or great; mean; not magnificent;

  3. Lowly; modest; meek; submissive; opposed to proud, haughty, arrogant or assuming.

  4. American Dictionary of The English Language, Noah Webster 1828

A Characteristic of God

Psalm 113:5-8
5 Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,
6 Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!
7 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;
8 That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people. KJV
Notice that God humbles Himself, therefore we must humble ourselves

Demonstrated by Jesus

Matthew 11:28-30
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. KJV
Being lowly in heart is the same as being humble in heart
Acts 8:32-33
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. KJV
Notice even though His judgment was removed He still took upon Himself the judgment of world. The Old Testament reference this comes from is Isaiah 53:7,8 in that account it states He opened not His mouth, therefore keeping your tongue is an act of humility. See Temperate in Tongue section

Resides in the Heart, in the Mind, an Attitude

Proverbs 16:18,19
19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. KJV
The humble person will enjoy the fellowship of like minded humble people, but he will also reach out to the proud if the right opportunity presents itself
Acts 20:17-21
19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: KJV
Notice that having a humble mind set should always be a part of our service unto God because we are ministering His Love to others therefore we must have His Heart in mind when we do it.
Colossians 3:12-17
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; KJV
You must first be thinking humbly before God to demonstrate humbleness among men.

Precedes Honor (by God)

Proverbs 15:31-33
33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. KJV

Proverbs 18:10-12
12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility. KJV

Proverbs 22:1-4
4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. KJV
Notice in this verse you must have both humility and a respect for God, salvation to have all three together – riches and honor and eternal life.
Proverbs 29:22,23
22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. KJV
Notice the honor from God can be sustained if one chooses to remain humble in heart, therefore avoid both anger and strife.

Precedes Exaltation (before men, on the earth)

Matthew 23:8-12
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. KJV
This was written for those who love to be called a high title
Luke 14:7-11
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. KJV
This was written for those who choose the best seats presumptuously
Luke 18:9-14
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. KJV
This was written for those who trusted in themselves and despised (lightly esteemed) others.
James 4:10-12
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. KJV
The humble don’t speak evil of others, therefore they don’t judge others.
1 Peter 5:5-7
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. KJV
The humble submit to God by casting all of their care (worries, fears, anxiety) upon the Lord.

Highly esteemed by God

Psalm 10:16-18
17 LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:
18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. KJV
Notice that one must be on the frequency of humility for God to hear their prayers. The Lord will prepare their heart and the Lord will open their ear to hear His voice (His Words).
Matthew 18:1-4
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. KJV
Notice Jesus said you must be saved and become humble (as a little child)
1 Peter 3:1-6
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: KJV
Just like wives submit to their husbands, workers should submit to their employers, and likewise ministers should submit to Jesus and the Father God.

Requirement for Salvation

Job 22:27-29
28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. KJV
Notice the confidence Job places upon this statement in verse 29. It is said that the word “shall” is the strongest word one can use in the English language for positive affirmation of a future event. From this we can conclude that only the non-humble (the proud) will ignore (or reject) God’s plan of salvation.
Luke 18:9-14
13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. KJV
Notice the second man is the basic attitude of a sinner when he comes to Jesus Christ looking for salvation as opposed to justifying his religious deeds to qualify for God’s salvation. The short prayer of the second man was all that was needed for salvation in contrast to the long prayer of the Pharisee which did nothing.

Can aid in deliverance from another man

1 Samuel 25:1-35
23 And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
24 And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.

32 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me:
33 And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. KJV
We are not sure if any of the women and children would have been killed by David and his mighty men but for sure they would have been widows and fatherless children if Abigail would have been prideful like her husband Nabal (Nabal meaning – foolish according to verse 25). We know that through Abigail’s humbleness she was lifted up later by King David to be his wife, which means her act of kindness made a lasting impression on David.-Refer to verse 39
Proverbs 6:1-5
3 Do this now, my son, deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. KJV
Notice that words and actions are what caused the bondage and not the written contract, the Lord will hold us accountable for what we say and do.
Matthew 18:23-35
26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. KJV
Notice again the servant not only fell down at the feet of the king but he also had to say something, therefore his words of wisdom and humility delivered him.

Is necessary for God’s Grace

James 4:5-7
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. KJV
Notice submission to God is necessary first before you can resist the devil. You can not oppose what you are going in the same direction of. Therefore you can not resist the devil if you are practicing his devices (his ways). As soon as you start obeying God’s Word you are automatically resisting the devil in your area of obedience. No one can serve two masters either you are submitted to God’s Word in a specific area of your life or you are obeying the ways of flesh (or devil) in that same area.
1 Peter 5:5-7
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. KJV
Notice that the Lord resist (wrestles against, blocks, frustrates) those that are proud this would include the plans and purposes of the proud also.

Used by God to test man

Deuteronomy 8:1-3
2 .... the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, .... KJV
Notice that test was one of remembrance or we could say one of remembering that God is the source and sustainer of our life.
Deuteronomy 8:14-20
14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; KJV
Notice that when a heart is lifted-up that person forgets the Lord, thus they are unthankful and less dependent (or totally non-dependent) upon God. Thus, those same lifted-up people are in disobedience to God because they openly depend upon someone or something other than God.
Typically the test is to see if man will rely upon God or get angry with God or trust in their own devices (their own deliverance, attempts to save themselves). Every person must reject all other wrong ways of self-salvation to totally trust in God’s Way of Salvation. Remember by being in the wilderness a while the Children of Israel showed their true colors of unbelief and unthankfulness. Notice both these verses say that God humbled the Children of Israel.

Prerequisite for Prayer

2 Chronicles 7:12-16
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place. KJV
Notice that the Lord has to encourage His People (not sinners, but rather Saints) to humble themselves because God’s humility is not automatic once you become saved.
2 Chronicles 34:22-28
26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD. KJV
This is another witness that the Lord is always watching our words and actions. Notice that those who refused to humbled themselves shall be humbled (judged) by God and those who humbled themselves withheld the judgment of God for a season.
Psalm 9:7-12
10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
11 Sing praises to the LORD, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.
12 When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble. KJV
Notice that prayer and humility is connected to God’s Will. Humility thinks of prayer and once you have prayed the Lord will give you His Will for the best way, which is how God’s Will gets preformed on the earth.
Psalm 10:17,18
17 LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:
18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. KJV
Notice that prayer and humility is connected to good judgment. Humility thinks of prayer and once you have prayed the Lord will give you wisdom for good decisions, which is good judgment.
Remember with prayer the position of the heart is more important than the position of the knees or hands. Jesus said the true worshipers will worship God in spirit and in truth, this principle is also true for prayer. When it comes to prayer one must pray God’s Word (truth) and be in the right spirit of love (one must be respectful to God when they come to him in humbleness loving both God, God’s Word and all people).

Associated with God’s People

Psalm 34:1-3
1 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. KJV
Notice that praise is associated with humility and the humble hear this praise and are happy about it (they join in with praises unto God themselves).
Psalm 69:30-32
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. KJV
Notice that praise is associated with humility and the humble see this and are glad about it. We also see that those who seek the Lord shall live which means the family of God is secure unto eternal life. Since the word “and” was used we can conclude that this is the same group of people, the humble, the praisers and the saved.
Isaiah 57:15
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. KJV
Notice that if we desire to dwell with God in fellowship we must be of a humble heart. There is a difference between having a home in Heaven and fellowshipping with your Heavenly Father God and Jesus Christ.

Note: Contrite – caused by or showing sincere remorse, true repentance from ungodliness.

Necessary for complete obedience

Genesis 6:13-22 and 7:1-5
6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him. KJV
We know it is not always easy to do exactly what the Lord requires of us. Therefore when we find those in the Holy Bible that completely obeyed God’s commandments we know those people had to keep in close fellowship with God which only the humble will do. Noah is the only preacher to have everyone on the earth either judged or saved during his ministry.
Philippians 2:5-11
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: KJV
Notice that for complete obedience the reward in verse 9 was high exaltation. Jesus humbled himself first and then God exalted him. We also see that according to verse 5 all Christians are suppose to think like Jesus. This is how we let “this mind” (His Mind) be in us. We could say all believers are commanded to let the Mind of Christ become an intricate part of our being that affects our life (thoughts, words and actions).
1 Samuel 15:1-28
17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? KJV
Notice that King Saul had changed, he was no longer little in his own sight, thus he substituted man’s plan for God’s plan. This is known as an ungodly compromise called substituting brass for pure gold. The Lord will have mercy if you are ignorant but when you know better you must do better, especially as a ruler of God’s People.
It seems that the humbler the person the more flexible (pliable) the individual. The Disciples of Christ should always be easily influenced by the Holy Spirit of God and easily persuaded by God’s Word. The true disciples of Jesus are willing to adapt to whatever the Lord sees fit and for this reason the humble person is typically more used by God to bring forth the Glory of God. Since God is the Potter and we are the clay we should be moldable into whatever vessel He desires that reflects the image of God designed for our life. Yes, the humble will not minister for God but rather allow God to minister through them in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen!

Some Characteristics of Humility

Acknowledges God’s Omniscience
Psalm 139:1-10
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? KJV
The humble man knows that there are a lot of things going on in the world that he does not understand. The humble person does not try to present his/her knowledge as superior over God’s Word.
Ezekiel 37:1-10
1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,
2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. KJV
As the Prophet Ezekiel had to speak to these dry bones to cause God’s life to come upon them, so we must speak God’s Word to situations in our life that need to have God’s Will manifested upon them. The Word of God will bring life to dried out (dead) situations in our life that need to come to life according to God’s Will. This is called using the Word of Faith which we preach to all contrary circumstances in our life in the Name of Jesus.
John 16:29-30
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. KJV
The Apostles of Jesus not only believed that Jesus knew all things but they were sure of it, we should be sure of that fact also, at least the humble will understand this and ask for God’s thoughts on all they do, or at least the majority of what they do.
John 21:15-17
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. KJV
Jesus wanted to see if Peter had really changed in his heart from the last time He was with Peter, when Peter proudly boasted that he would never forsake Jesus in Mark 14:27-31 and Luke 22:31-34 , now Peter humbly admits that God knows all things and he is not trusting in his own ability but rather Gods Grace. This example shows the obvious contrast between pride and humility.
If any Christian would like to be successful in this earth, they must know this fact. God knows so much more about you and the things going on in the world around you, that it is a sin not to acknowledge Him for direction concerning your life. Jesus is our only road to success, peace and satisfaction in this life.
Carefree
Matthew 11:25-30
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. KJV
Here we see that there are people who are heavy laden which means their mind is working overtime and Jesus promises them rest. Yes rest physically from excessive natural labor and rest for their soul spiritually, if they would only “Come to Him and learn of Him” by becoming meek (teachable) and lowly (humble) in heart.
Matthew 24:4-14
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. KJV
Notice in these verses Jesus speaks of perilous times but even with such a troubling prognosis the Lord Jesus tells you personally, “see that ye be not troubled”. The only reason Jesus can make such a bold statement of your responsibility is because He is expecting you to believe His Words in the Holy Bible that promise you peace, protection and a secured eternity in His Presence. Now the humble Christian believes this and that is why the Apostle Peter could sleep the night before his scheduled execution in Acts 12:1-11.
Philippians 4:4-7
5 Let your moderation (mildness, gentleness) be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. KJV
Because we pray first, then we believe the Lord is working things out for our good which allows us to be carefree, this all starts with humility. One way for our carefreeness to show is the giving of thanks to God for answering our prayer.
1 Peter 5:5-9
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. KJV

We can see that casting all our care upon the Lord is godly but we also need to realize that resisting the devil is godly too according to verse 9. Care, worry, anxiety, fearful concern is not only a lack of humility but it is also a sin before God because it is a clear violation of His Word spoken to all His Children.-Refer to Matthew 6:25-34 take no thought is mentioned five (5) times
Dependency upon God
Psalm 42:1-5
1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? KJV
We know that water is essential for the life of a hart (a mature male deer) so it ought to be with all Christians, our name alone implies an eternal connection to Christ, which mean we should be dependent upon our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus.
Psalm 73:23-28
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. KJV
Notice that even though Asaph’s (the Psalmist) physical body felt weak and even when his own heart fainted, he knew his strength came from God. We need to keep this in mind for our own selves when our feelings are contrary or even when our soul seems sluggish because the Lord is our Joy which is our strength, the humble know this.
Lamentations 3:20-26
20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22 It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. KJV
Notice that humbleness is contained within us and since this characteristic of God is hidden from the natural eye we must reveal this grace through our attitude, actions and words.
Job 23:10-12
10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.
12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. KJV
How many today believe like Job believed, that feeding yourself the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ (God’s Word), on a daily basis is more important than eating natural food? Based upon the nature of man not many and that is why Job is a perfect and upright man that feared God and eschewed (shunned, avoided) evil according to Job 1:1
John 8:28-30
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him. KJV
We must realize that we can do nothing of our self, the sooner we realize this the more dependant we will be upon God. The problem is many in the Body of Christ and the world all around do not possess this revelation. They simply don’t know this is truth according to God Almighty, this truth is non-negotiable.
John 6:67-69
67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. KJV
Notice the Words of Life are found in Jesus, in other words no other religion upon the face of the earth can feed you God’s Life outside of pure true Christianity, not even Judaism. Remember, many of the Jews did not believe on Jesus and they perished without Christ. Jesus is the Life God without Jesus you abide in death spiritually until you die physically to feel the sting of death for eternity (hell). We know God’s Grace is over all the people in the world but only through faith in the Person of Jesus Christ can one take advantage of this Grace unto Salvation.
Forgives
Psalm 86:1-7
4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. KJV
We know that humility comes from God so we can also see that the Lord is the Chief Forgiver.
Matthew 6:12-15
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. KJV
Notice in verse 12 that the humble person has the power to forgive people of past debts. In verse 14 we notice that the same humble people also uses that same power to forgive the sins of another. We believe that if you can forgive people of a financial debt then you can forgive a whole multitude of sins.
Luke 6:27-37
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: KJV
We notice in these verses that Our Lord Jesus is admonishing us to be humble by taking God’s position of loving our enemies, being merciful to all men, judging no one during the course of each day and condemning no one unto lasting punishment. Then the Lord states to forgive all people who have wronged you or those who have sinned against God. We all know only the humble servant of God can truly understand all this and have the power of God to perform (do, manifest) these instructions from God.
Luke 23:32-34
32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. KJV
Notice the heart of Jesus to be able to forgive those who are crucifying Him during the crucifixion. This is one of the ultimate manifestations of humiliation.
2 Corinthians 2:6-11
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; KJV
Notice that the Apostle Paul’s heart is very similar to Gods in the sense of having a desire to forgive all people but also a willingness to forgiving whoever we forgive. Therefore we can conclude that the humble man holds no grudges (offenses).
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. KJV
Notice that when we show humility by confessing our sins unto God, then in return the Lord forgives us through His humility of heart because He can identify with the frailties of all men.
Gentleness
Psalm 18:32-36
35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. KJV
Notice that gentleness just like humility is a path toward honor or exaltation. Typically people don’t associate gentleness with greatness but the man of God (King David) did for this reason we need to pay more attention to being gentle.
2 Corinthians 10:1
Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: KJV
Notice the terms “who in presence am base among you” is synonymous with humility and that is directly connected to gentleness.
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. KJV
Note: The fruit of the spirit operate with humility and if humility is lacking the fruit may not grow correctly or operate properly.
Titus 3:1-6
1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, KJV
Notice that we should be gentle and meek toward all men, this includes everyone that is in authority over us. Yes, the government, our boss, the pastor, the policemen, the school teacher, etc….
We must note that since gentleness is a fruit it can not be put on and then taken off. Therefore one must remain humble to keep this fruit producing and growing in their life. This is also another admonishment to not speak evil of those in authority over us, similar to the teaching in Romans 13:1-10
Loves Much
Luke 7:36-48
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. KJV
Notice that because this woman came from a background of sin she was not proud of her personal history or achievements, thus she was truly grateful for the grace of God shown to her. Her humility demonstrated toward Jesus equated to loving much because she loved God much. Therefore the people who have more humility also love more. We typically find the Christians who were delivered from a life of hard bondage or extreme circumstances seem to yield to more of God’s Love toward others because they love God more due to great appreciation for His Salvation.
Mark 6:31-34
34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. KJV
We can see that Jesus noticed the desire of other people and their desire moved Him to help them. This is a trait of humility when you think of helping others and we can see that when you couple a desire to help God’s people with ministering in the love of God it can satisfied the hunger of a multitude.
John 14:21-24
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. KJV
Here we see that loving much does not only apply to people but it also applies to loving God. Loving God (Jesus) is directly related to keeping (doing) God’s Word, those who love the Lord are those who are living His Word. Likewise, those that are not doing (living) God’s Word are those who are not loving God. The non-doers of God’s Word may be very religious and they may even love certain people but they do not love God unless they love God’s Word enough to be obedient to Jesus. It does not matter what other religions or even other men believe about God what matters the most is what God said about those who love Him, the key is keeping His Word.
Ephesians 5:1-2
1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. KJV
Notice in verse 1 the Apostle Paul uses the term “as dear children” which appeals to our humility because being humble is directly related to our love walk. Verse 2 reveals that Jesus loved us so much that He gave His all, even His life unto death allowing us to receive His life instead of death.
1 Thessalonians 3:5-13
6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.
12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. KJV
Notice how that faith and love (charity) was the measuring gauge used by the Apostle Paul to determine how a Christian was doing with God. Since the Apostle Paul is praying for an increase and abounding of love to be in the saints we can see that one must be in humility to receive God’s Grace to pour out more love to others
Low estimation of one’s own ability or self
Exodus 4:10-12
10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.
11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?
12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. KJV
We must be willing to go (obey) first, then allow the Lord to show us what to say and do after we leave. Therefore to hear correctly we must remain humble. Moses did not realize according to verse 10 that the Lord encourages us to be slow to speak according to James 1:19 because this allows us a better chance of hearing from God inwardly first, then speaking what we hear in our heart from Him. What Moses thought to be a curse was truly a blessing from God in retrospect. The Lord desires to teach all His people what to say in line with verse 12 but we must be slow to speak as James 1:19 indicates.
Judges 6:7-16
15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.
16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. KJV
Notice the Angel of the Lord in verse 12 speaks the Lord’s language of faith by calling Gideon a mighty man of valour before the war and even before Gideon believed he was.
Isaiah 6:1-5
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. KJV
It is very common to get into the Presence of the Lord and sense your own uncleanness, that is why these types of encounters are so humbling.
Luke 5:1-11
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. KJV
Notice how the Lord can come right where you are to make a lasting impression on you for His glory. Peter’s obedience got him a great reward of fish (provision). However Peter’s humility may have been the key to his calling (a new lifestyle) in the preceding verses 10 and the willingness to obey that calling in verse 11.
Meek (teachable)
Matthew 18:1-6
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. KJV
We all know that little children are teachable, generally they submit to their parents because they believe in their guardians as protectors and providers. Some people will have to learn to be teachable but the humble are not in that category because they are teachable (they are meek).
2 Corinthians 10:1
Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: KJV
Notice the terms “who in presence am base among you” is synonymous with humility and that is directly connected to meekness (teachableness).
Galatians 6:1-5
1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. KJV
Here the statement of “in the spirit of meekness” means in a teachable fashion realizing that you could fall also. Only the humble person can admit that he could fall too, except for the Grace of God operating in their life at that time keeping them from committing the exact same sin.
Ephesians 4:1-7
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. KJV
In verse 2 the statement “With all lowliness and meekness” could of easily read “With all humility and meekness” notice we need both working together to achieve the desired Godly result.
Meekness here means teachable, a person who will listen to God inwardly and men (and women) that God puts in your path to teach you what is good and right. It is more than just listening, it is the attitude in which you listen. How you listen with respect (humility) directly affects your ability to learn from that person. Meekness is required to learn from God which means if you are not meek you can not learn from God consider James 1:21,
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. KJV
Merciful
Exodus 34:5-9
5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance. KJV
Notice that mercy is not just something God does but according to verses 5 and 6 mercy is who God is, this means that the Lord’s nature is already merciful. Therefore God’s spiritual inclination is to be merciful toward you and me and even the greater thousand upon thousands according to verse 7.
Psalm 86:1-7,14,15
1 Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. KJV
We must know that if ever we even think (believe) or feel (or know) that we have done something wrong we can depend upon God’s mercy to withstand any judgment that would come against us. This means that God is always looking to defend us with His mercy because His mercy far exceeds any judgment that can come against us from men. If you need to rely upon God’s mercy everyday when you are going through a trial verse 3 states that the Lord’s mercy will always be there for you, yes everyday (brand new) that you may need it. For those who have been condemned by society acquaint thyself with God’s mercy until you know that God has forgiven you of all sins and with that forgiveness removed His judgment in Jesus Name.
Colossians 3:12-14
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; KJV
Notice that the Lord has given us bowels of mercies (tender mercies) for us to put on whenever needed, tender mercies are of the heart, not just an acknowledgement of no judgement. We are merciful simply because we love people, a compassionate mercy from the Heart of God. We just need to realize that mercy is always there for us and others. The humble will realize this gift from God to share with themselves and others. Notice also that this mercy is plural, yes mercies, therefore if a mercy was needed for each offense you have plenty to give out because the Lord has plenty of mercies to spare. God is Mercy, yes overflowing with Mercy and so should we.
Being merciful is a direct reflection of your humility because it always seems that the humble person can identify with all people and that compels them to be merciful. This is in contrast to the proud who think only of themselves and therefore judge everyone by their own standards. The humble love mercy over judgement whereas the proud love judgement over mercy. The difference is like the contrast between our Loving Jesus and the mean religious Pharisees or like the difference between God and the devil. If you have to choose let it be mercy and only allow judgement when you have no other choice because God’s Word has made the choice for you. Remember all those people in Heaven from the earth are there because of God’s Mercy and all those that are in hell are experiencing some form of judgment.
Patient
Ecclesiastes 7:8
Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. KJV
Notice the contrast drawn between the patience in spirit and the proud in spirit, this enlightens us to the humble in spirit being also the patient in spirit.
Matthew 18:23-35
26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. KJV
In these verses of scripture we can see a clear connection between patience and humility. Notice the servant fell down and worshipped the king showing humility but then the servant specifically asked the king to have patience with him, then the king did show patience with the servant by forgiving him the debt. Once the servant showed the proper attitude of humility the king had a legal loophole to show mercy, instead of judgment. Which means the king would never collect the full amount due him financially but he was happy to show mercy. We must know that the key to this parable is not the amount of money but rather the full showing of humility and honor to the one whom honor is due by asking for forgiveness. However when that same servant refused to show patience (mercy, forgiveness and humbleness) toward another fellow servant (that humbled himself) it proved the wickedness of his heart. This shows us that the first servant did not have a true heart conversion, but only a verbal response with an outward show to keep out of prison. Notice that the King took him at his word and forgave the first servant the debt but eventually the debt was restored. Some people may fool someone some of the time but you will never fool everyone all of the time. It is never right to ask God to give you something that you are not willing to give to others, if God forgave you through patience, humility, and mercy then you ought to be able to do the same thing to anyone who comes to you the same way. This is another example of how your actions toward others will speak louder than your words and actions toward God.
2 Timothy 2:24-26
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; KJV
The saying, “the fruit does not fall far from the tree” is true. Therefore since we see the other characteristics of humility like gentleness and meekness we can easily conclude that patience is another one of those godly characteristics.
Romans 15:1-7
1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: KJV
When the Holy Bible speaks of pleasing someone else over ourselves it has to be speaking about a humble person. We know the proud only think of themselves first and foremost. Since the humble is considering what is best for the other person they can be patient while waiting for a positive change in that individual
2 Peter 1:1-7
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. KJV
Notice that the Apostle Peter desires for all believers to have “grace” multiplied in their life and we have already shown that grace is given to the humble. These verses help us to see that there are other characteristics (qualities) of God that need to be added too, including patience. Patience is a fruit that needs to be developed over time it is more than a quick decision that is spoken by your lips. Patience is better seen in operation than confessed with the lips. Although it is good to speak of being patient, it is better to live a lifestyle of patience.
Peaceful, abide in God’s Peace
Psalm 4:3-8
7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.
8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. KJV
Notice this verse should be applied for good sleep, use to resist insomnia
Psalm 119:161-168
164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.
165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. KJV
Notice the connection between praising God and loving God’s Word to possessing God’s peace, doing these things helps you to experience God’s Salvation in your life. Notice verse 165 states great peace is for those that spend time with God by fellowshipping with His Word on a consistent and deeper basis.
Isaiah 26:3-5
3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
5 For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust. KJV
Here we see a connection between perfect peace and humility because the proud can’t hear from God so they don’t realize the Lord is working to bring down their city (their plans and purposes). On the contrary the humble have God on their mind because they trust in the Lord which brings them peace, yes perfect peace (undisturbed tranquility), thus the humble hear from God and obey His instructions.
John 14:22-27
25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. KJV
Notice that Jesus left His peace here with us but it is still up to us to use it by not letting our hearts be troubled. This is done by filling our heart with God’s Word as spoken of in verse 23. Notice that manifesting God’s Presence is manifesting God’s Peace.
Galatians 5:22-24
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. KJV
Notice that peace is one of the fruit of the Spirit and as we stated with gentleness humility must be present for proper growth and development of God’s fruit in your inner man (your spirit, your heart).
Philippians 4:4-13
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. KJV
Notice in these verses the connection between your decision not to be careful (having no worries) to allow the peace of God to keep your heart and mind. This is why humility is necessary because you have to decide not to worry and at the same time decide to trust God’s Word by being in agreement with all the previous verses of 4 through 8 to experience the peace of verse 9. After obtaining God’s Peace you can handle the various circumstances (conditions) of verse 12 in the contentment of verse 11 and through the strength of God mentioned in verse 13.
Colossians 3:10-17
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. KJV
Notice that humbleness of mind precedes letting the peace of God rule in your heart and that is because the humble mind will let God’s Will rule their thoughts, thus bringing God’s peace (God’s confirmation) into their heart. God’s peace is designed to keep you steady until the fullness of the blessing is manifest. Remember God’s Peace is synonymous with His Presence, or we could say the Holy Spirit.
Quick to repent before God when confronted with truth
2 Samuel 12:1-14
13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. KJV
Notice that even though David humbled himself his past sin still cost him and his family a great price. Humbleness is intended to keep you from sin and restore your personal fellowship with God. Humbleness will not always negate the negative consequences of pride although it will help you to ride through the storm set in motion by bad decisions.
1 Kings 21:17-29
26 And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
27 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.
28 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
29 Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? .... KJV
Notice again the sin Ahab committed cost him and his family something. We also see that Ahab could not even enjoy the vineyard because he obtained it through unrighteousness.
John 20:19-29
27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. KJV
Notice that even though Thomas made a mistake in judgment (he sinned) he repented of his sin and was completely resorted to perfect fellowship with God as soon as he humbled himself when confronted with the truth, Jesus Christ Himself.
Notice in all these examples the people first had to acknowledge that the words spoken matched the righteous judgments of God. Then they had to openly acknowledge that they were wrong by their repentant behavior showing us that what you do is more important to God than what you say with your mouth. Ahab said nothing but his actions spoke volumes. Remember that God is always looking at your heart so that is the key to true humility.
Quiet
Isaiah 30:15-18
15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength:....KJV
Notice that we must be developed in quietness to be still while we wait upon the Lord and when humility is present we will keep our confidence that God will come through for us even if we don’t see any sign of deliverance in the natural. We must be patient because the Lord is working good things on our behalf.
Isaiah 32:15-18
17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
18 And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places; KJV
Notice that if righteousness is in control of your situation there with be quietness and a calming assurance as opposed to turmoil and frustration.
1 Peter 3:2-5
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. KJV
Notice the connection between humility and submission, using quietness and obedience to God for preaching a message of Godliness rather than words. As we just stated in Isaiah 30:15 let quietness and your confidence in God be your strength.
1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;
11 And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; KJV
Notice that quietness at work is connected to God’s increase for your life.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. KJV
Notice that quietness at work is connected to showing others Godliness in your life.
Notice that quietness is not just a surrounding but also a condition of your heart and mouth, especially during times of work around others. We must strive to not be busy bodies in everyone else business because that behavior is ungodly. When you have close fellowship with God you are comfortable with His popularity as opposed to being considered popular with men. Quietness is a fruit of God developed as a lifestyle both inwardly (spiritually) and outwardly (naturally).
Respectful to God
Daniel 6:1-23
9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. KJV
Noticed Daniel kneeled showing humility and prayed showing his communion with God and then he gave thanks showing his faith in God answering his prayers. Daniel was not a wise man by accident but rather through purpose and godly principles.
Matthew 8:5-13
7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. KJV
Notice that even a Roman Centurion called Him Lord because he recognized the truth. This should let us know that anyone who desires to hear truth can, because God is not trying to hide His goodness from any man upon the earth. We also can see that his humility was not in vain but his servant benefited from the humbleness of the Centurion, his boss.
Matthew 15:21-28
26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.
27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. KJV
Notice that the woman was still respectful even when the Lord dealt firmly with her, she still acknowledged His words as Truth, and she still addressed Him as Lord. This small token of respect paid great dividends when it came to the deliverance of her daughter. Note that parents can greatly influence the health and well being of their children because humbleness is satisfied (fulfilled) in the prayers for godly results in another.
Submissive
James 4:4-10
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. KJV
Notice that submission to God is essential for effectively resisting (withstanding) the devil or even people. We must be in agreement with God’s Word, or better yet we must be doers of God’s Word to experience victory over the trials of this life. The only way to overcome the devil, sickness, disease and financial lack is to submit to God’s Word in all humility because that will open wide the gates of God’s Grace.
Philippians 2:1-11
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. KJV
Notice verse 3 states that “lowliness of mind” which is humility was demonstrated by Jesus first when submitting to the will of His Father God, then the multitudes submitted unto Jesus after that as mentioned in verse 11.
Ephesians 5:15-21
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. KJV
Sing to yourself and giving God thanks for all things will help you submit to other people because you can do it unto the Lord, rather than doing it just unto men.
Luke 22:39-46
41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. KJV
Notice that by kneeling down to pray (verse 41) Jesus became stronger (verse 43) to rise up and overcome the temptation of self-preservation.
1 Peter 3:1-2
1 IN LIKE manner, you married women, be submissive to your own husbands [subordinate yourselves as being secondary to and dependent on them, and adapt yourselves to them], so that even if any do not obey the Word [of God], they may be won over not by discussion but by the [godly] lives of their wives,

2 When they observe the pure and modest way in which you conduct yourselves, together with your reverence [for your husband; you are to feel for him all that reverence includes: to respect, defer to, revere him--to honor, esteem, appreciate, prize, and, in the human sense, to adore him, that is, to admire, praise, be devoted to, deeply love, and enjoy your husband]. The humble wife will submit to her husband because she loves God more than herself.
1 Peter 2:13-17
13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. KJV
The humble citizen will submit to their own government because they love God more than their self.
1 Peter 2:18-23
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: KJV
The humble employee will submit to their own company (including boss, supervisor, manager, etc…) because they love God more than their self. When asked to do something that is not illegal and clearly falls inside the lines of your job description the humble man will do it joyfully without complaint. This is accomplished by throwing the personal care of our soul (our future and well being) upon the Lord rather than the boss as described in verse 23 of Jesus.
We must note that submission is not agreement, it is when you don’t agree that you need to submit. If you do not submit to someone on earth I doubt that you submit to God’s Word on this subject. Humility does not have a problem submitting to others because humility knows there are some people who know more than you and by submitting to them you will keep yourself out of trouble (spiritually with God and sometimes practically with man).
Temperate in tongue
Proverbs 13:2-3
2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.
3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. KJV
Notice your words are feeding others just as much as they are feeding you. Good words are good fruit and evil words are poisonous to all souls.
Proverbs 21:23-24
23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath. KJV
Notice that the proud are scorners (mockers, scoffers) which means the humble are not. Therefore the humble will not make negative comments about others.
Matthew 5:33-37
37 Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong. NLT
The humble man does not try to explain himself or others, remember the Word of God stands on it’s own merit. Avoid making promises to people because you can not guarantee the future, nor what you will be doing in the future, especially the distant future.
James 1:17-19
18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: KJV
Slow to speak means you think before you speak and you determine if you need to speak at all. When you do speak your words are in line with God’s Word. Therefore speak only a few words at a time and let your words be far between intervals so that temperance is developed with in your heart and mouth as a life style.
KJV
Notice that it takes humility to not speak evil about others. Many people do not realize that when they do speak evil about another they are judging that person and manifesting pride.
1 Peter 4:7-11
7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. KJV
Notice that watching unto prayer is first in verse 7 so that you get God’s Heart then the scripture shows us in verse 11 that we are all preachers and teachers of God speaking on God’s behalf as Christians
The major difference between “Quiet” and “Temperate in Tongue” is that quietness should be developed as a way of life. We should strive to be a quiet people, that can have contentment in a room filled with silence. However being “Temperate in Tongue” means that you can control your language. You know how to shut up when you should not speak and on the contrary you learned when to speak up at the time you should not be quiet. The temperate tongue speaks God’s Words exclusively. This is critical for your spiritual growth and development primarily because the Children of God should speak the Word of God consistently, especially if you are speaking to God or others. Those two conversations should be exactly the same as the words God would speak to you. Once you have learned to speak God’s Words over yourself and into all circumstances or situations in your life, you qualify to be a true preacher or teacher of God even if your ministry is primarily one on one.
Thankful and Praiseful
Psalm 34:1-4
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. KJV
Notice that we should not expect others to speak well about God (boast in the Lord) if we are not willing to lead by example, remember verse 3 states “with me”, “let us”, and “together”.
Psalm 69:30-32
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. KJV
Here again we can see from verse 30 that the Psalmist David was praising the Lord first, so that the humble could recognize his heart for God and join in with David to praise and magnify the Lord with songs and thanksgiving.
Luke 17:11-19
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,
16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. KJV
Notice how Jesus truly appreciated the one Samaritan who came back and gave him thanks. The Lord delights in Praise, Glory, Worship unto God, we can see this was an act of humility.
Colossians 3:12-17
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. KJV
These verse tell us how to be filled with God’s Holy Spirit which includes His peace, it starts with put on humbleness with the fruit of God’s Spirit and it finishes with being thankful and singing spiritual songs unto the Lord in your heart.
Those who are truly humble will be sincerely thankful and praiseful, those who are not humble will be insincere and half hearted which will not be counted as true thanks or praise before God. To say thank you with a disrespectful attitude is unacceptable before God, it would be better to say nothing at all (unthankful) than to approach God dishonorably. We all can handle under appreciation better than being dishonored (disrespected). The Lord is commonly under appreciated but to know about God’s Will and choose to be disrespectful in His Presence is sin. Remember Cain in Genesis 4:5-7
Thinks of ministering to others and/or praying for others
Jeremiah 29:10-14
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. NKJV
Notice that the Lord is thinking about His people and yes He is thinking of good things for them. Not just the here and now but also the Lord is planning for His children to have a bright future.
John 17:1-26
8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; KJV
Notice how that Jesus included God’s people in His prayers because He was always thinking about them coming into the full knowledge and blessing of God.
Romans 8:26-34
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. KJV
Notice that the Holy Spirit helps us to make proper prayers (intercession, communication) with God, this is one of the many benefits of being filled with the Holy Spirit with the outward evidence of speaking in tongues. Notice that according to verse 34 Jesus is still praying for us also. Therefore God always has us on this mind whether we realize this or not.
Philippians 1:1-11
7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; KJV
Notice that the Apostle Paul also thought often about the saints and their welfare desiring to see them fully develop in the blessing of God. That desire compelled Paul to pray for them consistently and fervently.
Philippians 2:1-11
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. KJV
We know that lowliness of mind is speaking of humility so we can see the connection between being humble and looking past your self unto the needs of others
Romans 15:1-3
1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. KJV
It is implied that a certain portion of Believers will be strong, typically we can think of the Church elders or those in the full-time ministry. That is why those who are strong from spending more time in God’s Word and with God’s Presence should have some spiritual insight (or substance) to help those who are lacking something from God. If a weaker one is lacking understanding perhaps a bible teacher is needed. If a weaker one is lacking healing in a certain area of their body perhaps a minister who specializes in healing could help. The Believer is weak because they are living on earth without a local family of God (church) perhaps they just need to find a good church home. Whatever the case may be God with the Body of Christ has the right answer or ministry gift to help the weak to become strong in Christ Jesus.

Examples:

1 Kings 3:3-14
7 And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? KJV
Notice in this example King Solomon’s words and actions (prayer and worship was a part of the sacrificial ceremony) showed his humility. Since prayer was made to God that is why the Lord appeared in a dream to answer Solomon. If we humble ourselves in prayer by seeking God, the Lord will reveal Himself unto us also.
1 Kings 21:17-29
29 Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, ....KJV
Notice in this example King Ahab actions showed his humility and this demonstration of humility seems to prolong (delay) God’s judgment for his sin carried out by his actions.
2 Chronicles 33:10-13
12 And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, KJV
Notice in this example King Manasseh’s words and actions (prayers) showed his humility. One of his problems was that he had to be humbled by God first before choosing to humble himself. Originally the Lord sent warning to Manasseh and his people first in verse 10 but the people and Manasseh would not listen therefore God’s judgment followed. Pride will always bring a curse, whereas humbleness always brings a blessing.
Luke 5:1-10
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. KJV
Notice in this example Peter’s words and actions showed his humility. Peter submitted first in verses 4 and 5 then he humbled himself later after the miracle in verse 8.
Luke 23:32-41
34a Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. ... KJV
Notice that humility is able to forgive crucifying enemies and in this example King Jesus words and heart (attitude) showed his humility even in the presence of mockers and murders.
Acts 7:55-60
59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. KJV
Notice that humility is able to forgive destroying (killing) enemies and in this example Stephen (not an apostle, but rather an elder) words and heart (attitude) showed his humility.
Acts 9:10-19
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. KJV
Notice that humility submits to God’s Will even against personal understanding. Also notice that humility is able to walk by faith and receive specific instructions from God. In this example Ananias words and actions showed his humility as a disciple of Christ without a known title of position in the church.

There is a false humility

Colossians 2:18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, KJV

Colossians 2:23
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. KJV

This is what is practiced by other religions but does nothing for the true God of Heaven, our Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Many in the false religions worship images they have seen in their heart, although the encounter was probably spiritual it is not a spiritual encounter with the only true God, our Father or His Son Jesus Christ. Whatever their intentions we can not accept their visions that are contrary to the Holy Bible as truth. We must stay with the message of Christ Jesus which causes us to reject any other message outside of the Holy Bible (New Testament included) under this dispensation of Grace.

On the lesser side, there are even some Christians who put too much emphasis on their deeds done in the flesh but their only reward is the praise and/or adoration from men that think they are holy because of their lifestyle. It does nothing for God but it does move the person further away from God’s righteousness in Christ Jesus. Thus, they typically operate on the Law side of God’s Judgment (Moses) rather than the Grace side of God’s Mercy (Jesus).

The Lord can humble man

2 Corinthians 12:21
And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed. KJV
One type of humbling by God is when you experience a personal enlightenment (illumination) from the Lord that was different from what you were thinking at a specific time in the past. When we receive the new revelation from God we are humbled. This is typical for those who are convicted to be a Christian during a time of conversion. This is also common as we grow and mature in Christ as Paul indicates in this verse when the Apostle received a new way to view this prior situation with more of God’s grace being applied as noted in prior verses.
Daniel 4:27-37
37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase. KJV
Notice the King was warned by God first, then humbled by God and men secondly. Remember if we would judge our self (displaying humility) we would not be judged by other men (or God) harshly.

We can also be humbled by the circumstances working out negatively in a way contrary to what we had planned. This is known as falling flat on your face before others, which generally leads to a more humbler attitude (and approach) by the person. Yes some things do trip us up and those things that have caused us to stumble may have been caused by our pride or just ignorance of God’s solution (His Way or His Knowledge) concerning a specific situation. However as we grow in humility these types of mistakes will be fewer.

This problem with “pride” being a lack of humility is very real (and obvious) in the world today and even in the Body of Christ. This lack of humility can even lead to some people leaving this earth prematurely. – Refer to 1 Corinthians 11:28-32 If we judge ourselves we shall not be judged by God’s Word, the humble doers of God’s Word will never fall into this dilemma. We believe pride to be a prerequisite for God’s judgment because the deceitfulness of sin through the hardness of pride does not believe that they (the guilty party) are doing anything wrong. If one does not believe they are doing anything wrong they will see no reason at all to repent before God or their fellow man. For some examples of God’s judgment upon men select this link “PRIDE”. There you will find pride was always present before the Lord allowed judgment. When we refuse to humble ourselves after the judgment of God is pronounced upon us it is only a matter of time before it comes to pass in our life. We must know as God fearing Christians that God can humble us, if required, but He chooses to show us (and all mankind) mercy. If we stay humble or if we humble ourselves after the knowledge of practiced sin in our life we will never experience the full judgment of God upon our life and that my faith friend is good news. Amen!
